Menopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy: Feel Like Yourself Again

By: Jennifer Ellis, FNP-C

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are just three of our naturally occurring hormones, yet these three are responsible for so much. Every system in our body has hormone receptors sensitive to one or all of these hormone levels, whether they be too high, too low, or rapidly fluctuating. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), is also more properly called menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) when dealing with balancing hormones in the menopause transition. MHT is a treatment option involving supplementing those hormones that the body is no longer producing in sufficient amounts, and returning these levels to what they were previously can often restore balance and alleviate associated symptoms. (See our article Menopause Transition Symptoms).

In addition to alleviating symptoms caused by the menopause transition, MHT (estrogen in particular) is often considered to be an anti-aging modality. It is  protective for our bones, our cardiovascular system, and potentially our brains. When our hormones are balanced people commonly say they feel like themselves again.

Prescribing MHT is a very individualized process. There are many different options as far as hormone types, varying dosages for each type, and multiple methods of hormone delivery (pills, patches, creams, etc). Balancing your hormones will likely be a process as dosages may need to be adjusted with time. At Progressive Wellness & Aesthetics you will consult with a practitioner certified by the Menopause Society to be assured you get the most up-to-date information on hormone risks vs. benefits, current research, hormone balancing with the least possible side effects, and highest level of safety. We will listen to you and collaborate with you to help you achieve your goals and get you feeling like yourself again!
