Protein Power:
Why Getting Enough Protein is Essential for Maintaining Good Health
Priority Protein!

When you think of protein, your first thought shouldn't be of a big jug full of powder that a bodybuilder would buy at a vitamin store. Protein is a nutrient that is essential for many bodily functions. As we age, not getting enough protein in our daily diet can lead to muscle loss, or sarcopenia. If we are trying to lose weight we are even more prone to losing muscle, along with any fat loss. Here are more reasons why protein is so important.
Protein:
Builds and repairs: Proteins contain amino acids, which are literally the building blocks of muscles and other tissues, including our bones, hair and nails.
Is Essential for Hormone Production: Protein is necessary for hormone synthesis that regulates everything from mood to sleep, and so much more.
Is Fuel for Our Metabolism: Enzymes made of protein drive chemical reactions in your body that help maintain a healthy metabolism, and they can help us feel fuller longer. If you are trying to lose weight, you want to watch your calories while being sure to get enough protein intake for maintaining the muscle you have, as well as keeping up your metabolism.
Supports our Immunity: Antibodies and other cells which are our defense against illness are built from protein. Protein also promotes Glutathione, which is required for healthy immunity.
If you are a healthy adult, you should aim for 30 grams of protein per meal. Protein can be found in lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products (think greek yogurt and cottage cheese), tofu, beans, lentils, and nuts. And yes, there are always protein powders or shakes you can use in a pinch to add to a smoothie, as well. Do not miss out on getting enough protein every day, it is essential and needs to be a priority for anyone wishing to maintain good health.
