How Well am I Aging Internally?
A Look Into Testing our "Biological age"
By jennifer ellis, fnp-c
Our chronological age is how long we have lived, or more simply put - how many times we have been around the sun. But what exactly is our Biological Age?
Our biological age is how old our cells are. How quickly are we aging inside? Some people’s biological age is in line with their chronological age, and some people are fortunate enough to have a younger biological age than chronological age. And of course there will be people aging at a more rapid pace than they are chronologically.
We are lucky to be living in a time where we can test our biological age and see first hand how our cells are truly aging inside our bodies. This is a blood test where certain markers are tested and put thru a mathematical equation developed by Harvard researchers for our results.
There are likely many factors that play a part in having a slower biological clock such as genetics, nutrition, exercise and movement amounts, inflammation within our bodies, hormone optimization, sleep amounts, etc. Living a healthy lifestyle will certainly help us live a longer life. In fact, there are scientists studying Epigenetics (which is how our environment affects our structure and function) that will tell us that genetics plays a part in our biological age - but no doubt the choices we make in our everyday lives matter most of all!
